Overview

In April 2026, the U.S. imposed a naval blockade on Iranian ports, prompting Iran's Revolutionary Guards to declare the blockade a violation and threaten vessels near the Strait of Hormuz. This led to a dramatic collapse in maritime traffic, with daily transits dropping from over 125 to just 5-7 vessels, and hundreds of tankers and bulk carriers stranded. The blockade and Iranian countermeasures severely disrupted global oil, LNG, and fertilizer markets, causing soaring insurance costs and forcing many shippers to rely on risky shadow fleets. Additionally, widespread electronic warfare degraded vessel tracking, increasing navigational hazards and complicating enforcement, deepening the crisis and amplifying Iran's strategic leverage over this critical chokepoint.
