Israeli police said the attack happened Tuesday near King David’s Tomb on Mount Zion, and released CCTV showing the nun shoved down, then kicked as she lay on the pavement.
The French consulate identified the victim as a nun from the French Biblical and Archaeological School, while Christian leaders and Israel’s foreign ministry condemned the suspected racially motivated assault.
The incident has renewed concern over reported rising attacks on Christians in Jerusalem, following recent controversies involving Palm Sunday access at the Holy Sepulchre and damage to a Jesus statue in Lebanon.
