Pasquin of New York's Hospital for Special Surgery advises goblet squats, dumbbell chest presses and single-arm bent-over rows, with at least two full-body strength sessions weekly.
Johns Hopkins obesity specialist Dr Yuval Pinto said rapid GLP-1 weight loss can worsen sarcopenia; a 2024 Lancet study found 25% to 39% of weight lost on the drugs is muscle.
Experts said preserving muscle also depends on protein, sleep, age and slower weight loss, with Pinto suggesting 1.3 to 1.5 grams of protein per kilogram and losing 0.5 to 1 pound weekly.
