The $292M KelpDAO Bridge Exploit: How a Single Validator Breach Triggered a $13B DeFi Liquidity Collapse

Overview

In April 2026, attackers exploited a critical vulnerability in KelpDAO's LayerZero bridge by compromising its single validator node, enabling unauthorized minting of 116,500 rsETH tokens. These fake tokens were swapped for $292 million in assets, contaminating liquidity pools and devastating the KernelDAO ecosystem. The attacker then used the unbacked rsETH as collateral on Aave, borrowing $236 million in real assets and creating massive bad debt. This triggered a liquidity crisis, causing a $13 billion drop in DeFi value and forcing emergency freezes on Aave markets. Industry response included a $160 million recovery fund and a shift toward multi-verifier bridge security, while laundering efforts through cross-chain swaps and privacy tools complicated fund tracing.
