The April 2026 update centres on JESD82-552, while JC-40 and JC-45 target raw card designs reaching 12,800 megatransfers per second and plan a companion clock-driver protocol.
JEDEC said the standards are meant to improve bandwidth, signal integrity and timing stability in complex enterprise memory modules as AI and cloud workloads strain existing data paths.

In 2026, JEDEC finalized key standards for DDR5 MRDIMM technology, including the JESD82-552 data buffer and the near-release JESD82-542 clock driver, enabling MRDIMM Gen2 modules to double memory bandwidth per DIMM slot by multiplexing two ranks into a single high-speed data stream. This innovation delivers 33-35% faster bandwidth and 128 bytes per access, boosting AI and cloud workloads without changing existing DDR5 controllers. Major vendors like AMD and Intel are adopting MRDIMM, with Gen2 modules launching in servers by late 2026. While MRDIMM extends DDR5's relevance until DDR6 arrives around 2029-2030, future Gen3 scaling faces challenges in signal integrity, power, and cost, amid emerging alternatives like CXL and 3D DRAM architectures.
