The blaze burned for several hours on Friday at Liberty Waste Solutions on Gresham Lake Road near Capital Boulevard, where firefighters were still supplying water.
The North Carolina Forestry Service and the site's owner used equipment to move the mulch and help contain the fire.
Firefighters said no buildings were damaged and no roads were closed, with spontaneous combustion in dry, heat-filled mulch piles suspected as the cause.
