On HBO's Real Time, Maher pressed Newsom over California gas prices averaging about $6 a gallon, reaching $9 in some areas, and a high-speed rail project now estimated above $230 billion.
Newsom disputed the rail cost, said he inherited a mess from earlier administrations and argued California remains the world's fourth-largest economy despite criticism over rents, fuel costs and governance.
The exchange broadened an earlier Maher-Newsom clash over the governor's Fox News lawsuit, while Newsom also attacked Donald Trump as corrupt and predicted his unpopularity would hurt Republicans in November.
