NASA schedules STORIE mission launch in May to study Earth's ring current

  • The instrument will fly on SpaceX's 34th ISS resupply mission as part of the STP-H11 payload, a NASA and US Space Force partnership, then be mounted outside the station.
  • From that inside-out vantage point, STORIE will track energetic neutral atoms to determine whether ring current particles come mainly from Earth's atmosphere or the solar wind.
  • During its six-month mission, it will build a global picture about every 90 minutes, aiming to improve forecasts of solar-storm effects on satellites, power grids, pipelines and orbital drag.
