In Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, officials linked the spike to May Day actions on labour solidarity and immigration rights, with after-school activities, practices and competitions still scheduled.
Administrators said they could not safely supervise students district-wide after monitoring absences and exploring alternatives. Pupils in 4K through eighth grade will not need to make up lost instructional time.
The district said it is developing a make-up plan for grades nine through 12 to meet Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction expectations. Earlier reports described the action as a Day Without Immigrants protest.
