Police said the child was hit at about 8:18 a.m. at Lee Avenue and Lorimer Street in Williamsburg, suffered head and body injuries, and was pronounced dead at Woodhull Hospital.
Authorities said the driver was turning left when the boy was struck; the driver left the scene but returned, and police said it was not immediately clear why.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Council member Lincoln Restler called for safer streets, with Restler seeking new markings, longer pedestrian signals and a crossing guard at the busy intersection.
