Only human-performed roles and human-authored screenplays qualify, after questions over AI-assisted completion of Val Kilmer's posthumous performance.
International feature rules were widened so non-English films can qualify via top prizes at Cannes, Berlin, Busan, Sundance, Toronto or Venice, and countries may have multiple nominees.
The award will now be credited to directors, not countries; the 99th Oscars are on 14 March 2027 in Los Angeles before moving to the Peacock Theater in 2029.
