At May Day rallies in Taipei and Kaohsiung, teachers marked their first Labor Day holiday as unions sought full public pension funding and a rise in private-school contribution rates to 15% from 12%.
The National Education Industry Union also warned of mounting workloads, called for a review of school governance, and demanded salaries and benefits be written into law with regular adjustment mechanisms.
About 7,000 people from more than 100 labor groups joined rallies focused broadly on retirement reform after a 2025 amendment granted educators May Day leave; the Labor Ministry said it would keep consulting stakeholders.
