The company said it detected unauthorised access on 20 April, while ShinyHunters claimed it stole more than 10 million records and tried to extort payment.
Exposed data included names, phone numbers and addresses, with dates of birth and the last four digits of Social Security numbers or Tax IDs in some cases.
ADT said payment details and home security systems were unaffected, notified those impacted and offered identity protection, as reports said the breach may have begun with a vishing attack on an employee's Okta account.
