Lufthansa said the award is in its care in Frankfurt after Pavel Talankin was forced to check it at New York's JFK on Wednesday.
A security official had ruled the statuette could be used as a weapon, so it was boxed and placed in the hold, but did not arrive with Talankin in Germany.
The airline said it had apologised, was working to reunite Talankin with the Oscar quickly and had opened an internal review into how it went missing.
