Business Insider reporter Amanda Hoover built the voice-cloned AI to interview four sources and draft an 800-word article testing whether AI could do her journalism job.
Sources said the bot was overly flattering, struggled with pauses, twice dropped calls and missed nuance, while Hoover found its draft awkward and one trimmed quote misleading.
Hoover concluded transcription tools were useful, but consumer AI still lacked the skepticism, judgment, relationships and comfort with silence needed for strong reporting.
