Durham University archaeologist Gary Bankhead said Joan Ramsey told housekeeper Audrey Heaton to sink bagged items beneath Prebends Bridge in Durham, likely because they could not be sold or given away.
The hoard included a bronze crucifix, silver key, Russian icon and medals tied to the Second Vatican Council, found in distinct clusters suggesting deliberate disposal rather than theft.
Bankhead, who has recovered more than 14,500 River Wear objects, said the find reflects a longer English tradition of consigning religious or personal items to rivers.
