The Dutch Research Council awarded €9 million to the 10X-Factor(y) consortium led by Groningen's Beatriz Noheda, with TU Eindhoven, TU Delft, Twente, Infineon, Innatera and Snap involved.
The 10-year programme aims to build neuromorphic hardware using spiking neural networks and integrated memory-processing designs, targeting up to 10,000-fold efficiency gains and seven demonstrators in robotics, health monitoring and industrial automation.
Backed by industry and research partners for a total €30 million budget, the effort also seeks Dutch and European digital sovereignty by developing domestic chip designs and reducing reliance on foreign hardware suppliers.
As AI’s energy demand soars, can Europe's new chip designs secure both digital and energy independence?
Can brain-inspired AI finally overcome its challenges, or will it remain a niche technology?
