Shares gained 1.37% to $74.80 on Thursday as the S&P 500 rose 1.02% and the Dow added 1.62%.
AIG beat peers including Chubb, up 0.38%, Progressive, up 0.31%, and Cigna, which fell 0.60%.
The stock remains 14.48% below its 52-week high of $87.46 reached on 6 June, while trading volume of 10.7 million topped its 50-day average of 4.1 million.
