California officials warn over dangerous e-bike misuse

In San Francisco, Attorney General Rob Bonta joined Bay Area district attorneys in a consumer alert saying some Class 2 bikes are being unlocked above the 20mph legal limit.
Officials said bikes exceeding 28mph become mopeds requiring helmets, licences, plates and insurance, while riders were also seen using pedal-less bikes and riding illegally on sidewalks.
Retailers called for stronger import checks and police education, as a UCSF study found e-bike rider injuries nearly doubled annually from 2017 to 2022 amid rising sales.
