California Legislature advances three e-bike regulation bills

SB 1167, by Senator Catherine Blakespear, cleared the Senate Transportation Committee, while AB 1557 passed Assembly committees and AB 1942 proposes DMV registration for Class 2 and 3 e-bikes.
SB 1167 would require clear labelling and stop non-compliant vehicles being sold as e-bikes; AB 1557 would cut Class 1 and 2 speed limits to 16mph and tighten the 750-watt rule.
The measures drew mixed reactions in La Jolla, with supporters calling SB 1167 targeted consumer protection and critics warning AB 1557 and AB 1942 could disrupt California's market without addressing illegal e-motos.
