Canadian payroll employment falls in February as weekly earnings rise

  • Statistics Canada said payrolls fell by 60,200 to reverse January’s gain, while average weekly earnings rose 1.4% to C$1,338 and vacancies held at 497,200.
  • The biggest payroll declines were in transportation and warehousing, administrative and support services, and retail trade, while average weekly hours were 33.3, down 0.9% from a year earlier.
  • Year on year, payroll employment was virtually unchanged, earnings rose 3.4%, the job vacancy rate stayed at 2.8%, and there were 3.1 unemployed people for every vacancy.
