MIT faces science funding crisis as Kornbluth warns on research

Kornbluth said MIT has budgeted for a $300m annual hit on a $1.7bn budget, including $240m from an 8% endowment tax plus reduced federal grants.
She said uncertainty is weakening basic science and graduate training, with researchers filing many grants without knowing whether competitive funding opportunities still exist.
Kornbluth said universities underpin long-term innovation, from cancer immunotherapy to AI and quantum, and warned cuts and fewer international students could damage US competitiveness for decades.
