Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory researchers reported that PTP1B inhibition also helped microglia clear amyloid-beta plaques, in a study published in PNAS.
The team said blocking PTP1B boosts SYK signalling, improving the brain immune cells' ability to remove harmful buildup linked to Alzheimer's disease.
Because PTP1B is also tied to obesity and type 2 diabetes, the approach could target multiple risk pathways and potentially complement existing approved Alzheimer's drugs.
Could a single pill targeting this protein treat Alzheimer's, diabetes, and obesity at the same time?
Beyond clearing plaques, can this new approach also fight the toxic tau tangles seen in Alzheimer's disease?
This Alzheimer's drug works in mice. When can patients expect to see it in human trials?
