Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche signed the order last week, moving state-licensed medical cannabis and future FDA-approved cannabis products from Schedule I to Schedule III.
The administration said the step creates an expedited, treaty-compliant pathway, but industry figures and reform advocates said it adds confusion and leaves implementation, protections and broader rescheduling uncertain.
A new DEA administrative hearing is set for 29 June, while adult-use cannabis remains outside the change, potentially limiting benefits and excluding many Black and Latino entrepreneurs.
