Imbert will leave his post as France's ambassador to Australia and take over as Elysee secretary-general on 4 May, replacing Emmanuel Moulin.
The move returns Imbert to Macron's inner circle, where he previously served as social affairs adviser in 2017 and deputy chief of staff from 2020.
Moulin's departure also clears the way for Macron's close ally to be nominated to lead France's central bank, according to the report.
