Kuomintang Chairperson Cheng Li-wun said on Thursday she had asked to meet President Donald Trump, but acknowledged securing talks could be very difficult.
She said the visit would help present her as a leader able to reduce tensions with China through dialogue with the world's largest economies.
The move follows her rare meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, highlighting the opposition's effort to project cross-strait engagement alongside outreach to Washington.
