In Nature Medicine, the observational study found more than one-quarter of microbes differed, analysing 271 UK patients, 43 symptom-free GBA1 carriers and 150 healthy controls.
The findings were also seen in more than 1,400 participants across the UK, Korea and Turkey, while more diverse, balanced diets were linked to lower-risk microbiome patterns.
Researchers said the work could aid very early detection and future treatments, but stressed it does not prove causation and that genetic and environmental factors may also shape Parkinson's risk.
