The Michigan city said the council-directed removal was completed this week after a unanimous 10-0 vote in December, with Mayor Christopher Taylor and councillor Jen Eyer defending the move.
Officials said the defunct programme’s signs did not reduce crime and could reinforce biased surveillance, while MLive reported in January that $18,000 was set aside for removal from cash reserves.
The decision drew online mockery and criticism from Republican figures including New York City councillor Vickie Paladino and former Michigan gubernatorial candidate Tudor Dixon, who said it prioritised criminals over communities.
