Stockholm University scientists uncover critical point in supercooled water

Using ultra-fast X-ray pulses at South Korean facilities, the team identified the state at about -63C and 1,000 atmospheres, with results published in Science.
The finding supports the theory that water has two liquid forms whose distinction disappears at a critical point, helping explain anomalies in density, compressibility, heat capacity and viscosity.
Researchers said the work could settle a debate lasting more than a century and guide future studies of water's role in physical, chemical, biological, geological and climate processes.
