Askew, 52, was released on Friday in Middle Georgia after serving a life without parole sentence since 1998.
His release was supported by former prosecutor Kelly Burke, who had pushed for the harsh sentence but later regretted it and advocated for Askew's freedom.
The courtroom was filled with about 50 supporters, including a juror and victims, as the current district attorney agreed to a reduced sentence and Judge G.E. Adams approved Askew's release.
