Xavier Nwankpa stood out in Kansas City’s first training camp practice, nearly intercepting Patrick Mahomes, adding multiple pass deflections and picking off Justin Fields on an option route.
7-on-7 work drove most of the action because only 39 players were on the field, leaving the Chiefs short of enough bodies for full 11-on-11 drills.
Patrick Mahomes took all individual and 7-on-7 reps without issue, throwing a touchdown to Jimmy Holiday and a sharp no-look red-zone pass to Andrew Armstrong that was dropped.
Jadon Canady also flashed in the secondary with a deflection against Mahomes and an interception, though the pick likely would have drawn pass interference in a game.
Kansas City returns Sunday for another closed practice, with veterans due Monday evening as the club builds toward a fuller camp workload.
