Q: Why did House of the Dragon intentionally deny its most hated villain the glorious, dramatic death he spent all season craving?

Because *House of the Dragon* wanted Criston Cole’s end to be a judgment on the character, not a reward for him. The episode follows the logic of George R. R. Martin’s *Fire & Blood*, where Cole also dies by arrows during the Butcher’s Ball rather than in a noble duel. That matters because Cole had spent the season trying to recast himself as a tragic warrior deserving of songs and glory. The show’s answer is that he had earned neither. By refusing his offer of single combat and killing him quickly, Team Black strips away the heroic narrative he was trying to author for himself. That choice also fits the series’ long view of Cole. He was central to the war’s outbreak and escalation: his betrayal of Rhaenyra, his role in crowning Aegon II, and a trail of killings and ruthless decisions made him one of the conflict’s chief agents. An elaborate, triumphant death would have risked romanticizing a man the story treats as deeply hypocritical and destructive. The staging reinforces that point. He dies early in the episode, almost without pause, and the story immediately moves on. Even the omission of the book’s famous taunt — “I’ll have no songs about how brave you died, Kingmaker” — makes the scene colder. Rather than give viewers a cathartic one-liner, the show lets the emptiness of his death speak for itself. In effect, the series denies Cole the legacy he wanted to show that war does not deliver moral redemption on demand.
