Summary
Ser Gwayne Hightower dies in "Fire & Blood" when City Watch commander Ser Luthor Largent seizes, disarms and stabs him as Rhaenyra returns to King's Landing.
Gwayne had rushed to the stables to raise the alarm, but the gold cloaks stayed secretly loyal to Daemon and opened the city gates instead.
Rhaenyra entered with Syrax, Daemon on Caraxes and new dragonriders, meeting little resistance after Aemond left the capital for Harrenhal on Vhagar.
King's Landing falls in less than a day, Rhaenyra takes the Iron Throne, and Otto Hightower is later beheaded as a traitor.
The show has already diverged: Gwayne survives past this point, while Luthor—his book killer—is already dead.
