What awaits Olwen appears to be a conspiracy with potentially city-shaking consequences, not just a personal reckoning. In Blade Runner 2099, Michelle Yeoh plays Olwen, a replicant Blade Runner who is days from the end of her lifespan and is hunting rogue replicants alongside Cora, a human fugitive played by Hunter Schafer. The official description says they are tracking a runaway “hiding a truth that could collapse their fragile city.” The larger backdrop is even darker. The series is set 50 years after Blade Runner 2049, in the aftermath of a successful replicant uprising. Showrunner Silka Luisa has framed the series around the question of what remains of humanity when humans are no longer dominant. Reporting from Comic-Con and follow-up interviews indicate Olwen and Cora’s partnership is driven by conflicting secrets and survival stakes that threaten to boil over. The trailer also points to simmering resentment, with humans seeking to reclaim what they lost and replicants determined to keep control. So the “dark secrets” are not fully revealed yet, but the evidence points to a hidden truth involving rogue replicants, the postwar power structure, and Olwen’s own role in a collapsing social order as her life runs out.
