Summary
Edmunds data showed Toyota became the top destination for Tesla trade-ins in Q2 2026, taking 17.3% of those purchases after ranking seventh at 6.9% in Q2 2021.
Tesla owners are increasingly leaving pure EVs: only 22% bought another EV in Q2, down from 40.2% a year earlier, while hybrid purchases rose to a record 20.5%.
Toyota’s hybrid-heavy lineup is absorbing that shift, led by the now hybrid-only 2026 RAV4 and plug-in variants that offer up to 54 miles of electric range and nearly 500 miles total range.
Demand is strong enough to strain supply—one California dealer had more than 800 RAV4 buyers waiting—and the model outsold Tesla’s Model Y in the U.S. last year, 479,288 to about 357,000.
Toyota is also gaining in pure EVs: Cox said its U.S. EV sales jumped 225% year over year in Q2 to 11,826, putting the brand among the market’s top five EV sellers.
