NYU Langone Study Finds E-Bike Trauma Topped 50% by 2023 as Brain Injuries Surge

More than 50% of Bellevue trauma cases involving bikes and scooters were tied to e-bikes by 2023, up from less than 10% in 2018, according to an NYU Langone advisory based on a Neurosurgery study.
One-third of 914 injured riders and pedestrians suffered traumatic brain injury, more than two-thirds were hospitalized and about 30% needed intensive care, underscoring the severity of the surge.
About half of all cases involved collisions with cars or trucks, while fewer than one-third of riders wore helmets; 20% tested positive for alcohol, both factors linked to worse head and facial injuries.
Pedestrians hit by electric vehicles suffered brain injuries at nearly twice the rate of riders, and researchers said safer bike lanes, helmet use and speed enforcement could curb mounting neurosurgical demand.
