Genevieve strengthened from a tropical storm into a Category 1 hurricane with 90 mph winds, about 500 miles south-southwest of Manzanillo and moving west-northwest at 17 mph.
Forecasters said it is likely to intensify into a major hurricane in coming days while staying well offshore on a track roughly parallel to Mexico’s coast, with no coastal watches or warnings in effect.
Swells from Genevieve were already affecting southwestern Mexico, and the National Hurricane Center warned of life-threatening surf and rip currents reaching southern Baja California by Sunday night or Monday.
Farther west, Hurricane Fausto weakened to Category 1 with 90 mph winds about 995 miles east of Hilo, though forecasters said Hawaii should still monitor dangerous surf risks as it weakens further.
