A fourth heat wave since May is set to spread across large swaths of Europe from Monday, with parts of western Europe forecast to hit 40C or higher by midweek.
Months of repeated heat and scant rainfall have left vegetation tinder dry, creating conditions for fast-moving wildfires across western and southern Europe.
More than 300,000 people had evacuated or sheltered as of Sunday while hundreds of firefighters battled blazes near major cities in France and Spain.
Fires have also raged in Sicily and Calabria, while in Scotland residents were allowed home after 500 firefighters spent 10 days containing a Cairngorms National Park blaze.
