19 songs follow the breakup, addiction, rehab and sobriety that Peck says forced a reckoning between his public persona and private self.
Three collaborators — Emmylou Harris, Allison Russell and Noah Cyrus — open the record with a bluegrass hymn imagining if Peck had not survived that night.
A 19-date North American "Man Turned Mule Tour" runs from Oct. 28 to Nov. 22, with tickets on sale July 31 and $1 per ticket going to The Trevor Project.
The album arrives as Peck, who made his Grand Ole Opry debut this week, pushes a broader vision of country music that includes queer artists and outsiders.
