Johns Hopkins APL has been assembling NASA’s car-sized, nuclear-powered Dragonfly since March, with the Titan rotorcraft now in integration and test ahead of a July 2028 launch.
The 8-rotor craft is designed to travel more than 50 miles across Titan, carrying a mobile science lab that can sample multiple sites instead of staying near a single landing zone.
Engineers have finished structural tests for launch, landing and flight loads and are moving into electrical integration, with insulating foam installation due through the end of 2026.
A custom Titan Chamber at APL will begin environmental testing in early 2027, recreating roughly minus 300 degrees Fahrenheit conditions and Titan’s pressure to validate the spacecraft.
After a six-year cruise, Dragonfly is slated to arrive in 2034 and spend 3.3 years studying Titan’s weather, surface and chemistry for clues to pre-life conditions like early Earth.
