Comic-Con Draws Michelle Yeoh, Rick Moranis for 2027 and Nov. 25 Releases

Q: What convinced the famously elusive Rick Moranis to finally don Dark Helmet again after decades away from the screen?

What brought Rick Moranis back was a mix of timing, the strength of the new idea, and his attachment to the original “Spaceballs” team. At Comic-Con, Moranis said the sequel “came along at the right time” and that returning as Dark Helmet simply “felt like this is it. It’s time.” He told fans that saying yes was “the best decision I’ve ever made,” and elsewhere described the film as feeling “like family.” The project itself also appears to have mattered. Josh Gad, who helped drive the sequel into development, shaped it as a satire of today’s franchise-heavy movie culture — sequels, cinematic universes and nostalgia — much as the 1987 film spoofed the blockbuster landscape of its era. That updated comedic target gave the sequel a clear reason to exist beyond simple reunion value. Moranis also suggested his absence had been overstated. He joked that he “really wasn’t retired” and was “just negotiating,” adding that he and Mel Brooks had been talking about a sequel as far back as 1989. In other words, the return was less a sudden reversal than a long-delayed project finally coming together in a form he wanted. He also said that once he was back in costume and inside Dark Helmet’s oversized helmet, it initially felt strange, then quickly felt right again. That reaction, combined with the script, the nostalgia factor and the chance to reunite with Brooks and other returning cast members, appears to have sealed the decision.

Q: How did a scrapped pitch for a different 80s classic secretly evolve into the ultimate Spaceballs sequel?

It grew out of a failed **Honey, I Shrunk the Kids** sequel that Josh Gad had been developing with Rick Moranis. At Comic-Con, Gad said that project collapsed, but it led him back to Moranis’ 1980s films. While watching **Spaceballs** with his daughter, she asked to see “part 2,” picking up on Mel Brooks’ joke at the end of the 1987 film about a sequel. Gad explained there was no sequel, but the question stuck. He has also said the idea came to him that night, and he soon took a new pitch to Brooks. What changed was the target. Instead of reviving **Honey, I Shrunk the Kids**, Gad realized **Spaceballs** was the better vehicle for satirizing the modern franchise era. The original mocked **Star Wars** and blockbuster culture in the 1980s; the new version could take aim at today’s world of legacy sequels, cinematic universes, fan obsession and endless rebooting. That is why the sequel unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con leans so heavily into parodying contemporary studio culture, including a fake **“Spaceballs Cinematic Universe”** and mock phases such as **“The Almighty Schwartz Saga.”** In effect, a dead-end pitch for one Moranis nostalgia property became the engine for another — and, in Gad’s view, the more natural and timely one. The result is **“Spaceballs: The New One,”** with Moranis returning as Dark Helmet, Brooks back as Yogurt, and the film set for release on **April 23, 2027**.
