Investigators say he gave her $200 upfront, took her shopping for lingerie, and later gave her another $600 during dinner before the pair went back to his home in The Villages area. Deputies say the woman became uncomfortable once there and texted friends who had driven her to the date to come get her. As she left, O’Brien allegedly demanded the money back, telling her that “was not the agreement.” When she refused and got into her friends’ car, the disagreement moved from a private setting to the road. Investigators allege O’Brien then chased the group in his Ford F-150 through the retirement community, ramming their vehicle at a roundabout and causing it to crash into a pole. He allegedly struck it again, disabling the car. After the occupants fled, deputies say O’Brien confronted a 22-year-old man with a semi-automatic Ruger rifle, ordered him to the ground, and threatened to kill him. O’Brien later told investigators he believed he had been “scammed.” That claim, however, did not prevent his arrest. He now faces felony charges including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and aggravated battery.

To prove it was a setup, investigators would need more than O’Brien’s belief that he was “scammed.” They would look for messages showing advance coordination to take money under false pretenses, conflicting statements, location data, surveillance video, prior similar complaints, or evidence the group never intended to complete the agreed meeting and instead planned an extraction from the start. The reported blacked-out taillights may have raised his suspicions, but they are not proof of fraud. Legally, even if O’Brien believed he had been deceived, that would not justify allegedly chasing the car, ramming it, or pointing a rifle at someone. Those acts are what support the felony charges now filed. At this stage, the public record supports an alleged violent dispute after a date arrangement soured, not a proven preplanned trap.
