Murphy Denies Knowing of 6,600 Non-Citizen Voter Registrations in New Jersey

Phil Murphy said through a spokesman he did not know before Tuesday about an MVC software glitch that mistakenly added roughly 6,600 non-citizens to New Jersey’s voter rolls.
The faulty registrations occurred between June 2023 and June 2024 after applicants told MVC offices they were not U.S. citizens, yet the system registered them anyway; fewer than 400 later cast ballots.
Mikie Sherrill, who took office in January, has blamed the lapse on the Murphy administration, saying the problem went undisclosed and unaddressed long after it was discovered.
Sherrill has ordered an independent investigation and said the findings will be made public, while Murphy’s former acting MVC chief Latrecia Littles-Floyd led the agency during the period of the error.
The dispute adds to already strained ties between Sherrill and Murphy and cuts into a politically sensitive area after Murphy made expanding ballot access a signature issue of his eight years in office.
