Summary
Dawsons Auctioneers will sell Morrissey’s pre-Smiths letters on 26 August, with the 1974-79 archive expected to fetch a combined £22,000.
The letters, sent to Birmingham pen friend Simon Pitt when Morrissey was 14 to 20, capture his early ambition to become “a rock ’n’ roll star” and his claim that “I always said I was a genius.”
They also trace his immersion in punk and music culture, including seeing the Sex Pistols in 1976, meeting Patti Smith, visiting CBGB’s and fronting Manchester punk band The Nosebleeds.
Beyond music, the correspondence records his views on 1970s Britain — including a hostile reaction to Margaret Thatcher’s 1979 election — before he formed The Smiths with Johnny Marr in 1982.
