Summary
3:52.65 put Sean McCann into Saturday's Commonwealth Games 400m freestyle final after he finished fourth in his Glasgow heat and claimed the eighth and last qualifying spot.
The 21-year-old Scot, racing at his first major championships, said the home crowd at Tollcross and family support helped drive his final 100m in a field he had not expected to escape.
Sam Short of Australia set the qualifying pace, about four seconds faster than McCann, and the final also includes Olympic champion Daniel Wiffen and defending champion Elijah Winnington.
McCann, a Loughborough chemical engineering student eligible for Scotland through his father, is also entered in the 800m and 1500m and said the Olympics remain his longer-term target.
