That early medium-tyre pace suggested Ferrari expected both drivers to clear the first cut comfortably despite a hot 26C ambient and near-50C track temperature.
Valtteri Bottas aborted his first run before returning to post a time about a tenth quicker than Sergio Perez’s opening effort, while Carlos Sainz ran off at Turn 4 and had to abandon his lap.
Track position and traffic were in focus on the tight Budapest circuit, with Williams, Cadillac and potentially Aston Martin seen as vulnerable in Q1 after practice.
