Trump said in an Oval Office press conference he might impose tariffs on Mexico over “the lettuce” and on Canada over wildfire smoke after being asked when it would be safe to eat lettuce again.
The remarks came as federal officials investigate a cyclosporiasis outbreak tied to produce concerns and as Canadian wildfire smoke again drifts into the United States, triggering air-quality problems.
CDC updated the outbreak Friday to 4,173 laboratory-confirmed cases since May 1, with another 7,400 suspected cases not yet confirmed and reports now spanning 41 states.
Canadian smoke has repeatedly darkened skies across parts of the U.S.; in 2023 about 75 million people were under alerts as more than 9 million acres burned in Canada.
