California Ranks 37th in Youth Risk Study as Labor Participation Falls to Fourth-Lowest

California scored 37.94 and ranked 37th in WalletHub’s at-risk youth study, placing it better than many Western peers despite affordability and opportunity concerns.
The weak spot was youth labor force participation: California had the nation’s fourth-lowest share of young adults working or seeking work, behind Mississippi, New York and New Jersey.
Across WalletHub’s 15 metrics, the state ranked 30th in education and employment and 39th in health, while still outperforming Oregon at No. 6, Nevada at No. 7 and Arizona at No. 16 in overall youth risk.
Nationally, 13% of people ages 18 to 24 were neither employed nor in school, a pattern WalletHub said can threaten states’ future economic and social progress without more investment.
