They are not owning a traditional copy of the game; they are buying a boxed retail package that grants a single-use digital license, subject to platform and regional rules. In practical terms, the box appears to provide three things: collectible packaging, proof of purchase for resale at retail, and a redemption code that unlocks GTA 6 on a qualifying account. For PlayStation in Japan, that means a Japan-registered PSN account, because the code is region-locked. Once redeemed, the buyer gets access to download and play the game under Sony’s and Rockstar’s standard digital-license terms, not ownership of software fixed on a disc. That distinction matters because a disc traditionally carries a usable local copy that can often be resold, lent, or preserved more easily. A code-in-a-box does not. The code is single-use, tied to an account after redemption, and in Japan reportedly expires 170 days after the November 19, 2026 launch date. If it is not redeemed in time, the retail box could become worthless as a means of accessing the game. So the “physical version” in Japan is effectively a time-limited digital entitlement packaged as a boxed product. Buyers own the box and any included printed materials, but their ability to play GTA 6 depends on redeeming the code on the correct regional account before expiry and then continuing to rely on the platform’s digital ecosystem.

Japanese PS5 buyers who get GTA 6 as a code in a box will have only 170 days from the Nov. 19 launch to redeem it before the code expires.
Rockstar says the limit stems from Japanese regional regulations; the restriction applies only in Japan and only to PS5, while Xbox download codes are not region-locked.
Rockstar’s support page also says GTA 6 can be pre-loaded from Nov. 12, and a support email indicated the code-in-a-box edition is the only physical release planned for now.
That has intensified complaints from fans already frustrated by the lack of a disc version, though the game still reportedly has a record pre-order campaign and is projected to sell 37 million to 51 million copies in its first week.
