That is why a moderate island-wide inflation rate concealed a severe squeeze on pensioners’ living standards. Inflation averages all households, but older residents faced concentrated rises in unavoidable costs while typically living on fixed incomes that do not adjust quickly. Even low-income household inflation, at 3.6%, remained above the headline rate, underscoring how vulnerable groups were hit harder than the average suggested.
